Our History
We have provided Puyallup Jiu-Jitsu since 2022 and built a place for all types of martial arts and BJJ practitioners to train. We started out as Alliance Puyallup and have grown into our own brand, Solid Jiu-Jitsu. Our school is led by a passionate team who not only love to teach, but are always learning too. At the forefront is our owner, John Cofer. He has an extensive background in and out of martial arts. He served in the military, serving in the Navy during the Gulf War era. Now, he brings his passion into helping others onto the mat, making Solid Jiu-Jitsu the best Jiu-Jitsu school it can be.

John Cofer
Owner and Head Instructor
3rd Degree Black Belt
John Cofer is the owner and head instructor at Solid Jiu-Jitsu, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to his students. A Navy veteran from the Gulf War era, John’s journey in martial arts began in the mid-1990s with Karate. His dedication to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu truly took root in 1997 when he began training under Professor Claudio Franca in California.
After a hiatus from Jiu-Jitsu following his move to Washington state in 2007, John enthusiastically returned to training around 2013. His commitment culminated in receiving his black belt in 2017 from Professor Michael Feritter (LTG ret), and he currently holds the rank of third-degree black belt.
Beyond his role at Solid Jiu-Jitsu, John is deeply invested in giving back to his community. He spearheads Dominator Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics workshops, holding three events annually. Through these workshops, he has hosted over 20 events, providing free Jiu-Jitsu-based techniques to law enforcement officers across Western Washington. John is also an entrepreneur, owning Mattitude Jiu-Jitsu, a lifestyle clothing company.
When not on the mats, John cherishes time with his wife, Flora, and their family. His diverse hobbies include woodworking, baking cheesecakes, and cooking healthy, real food.
Brooke Music
Coach
Black Belt
Brooke is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and PMHNP-BC with a passion for helping others grow both on and off the mats. Her coaching reflects her passion for working with veterans and active-duty service members in the mental health care space, as well as her involvement with the We Defy Foundation, which supports the mission of empowering combat veterans through jiu-jitsu.
Jenny Liou
Coach
Black Belt
Jenny Liou is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and a retired professional fighter. She coaches women’s classes and actively trains and competes while parenting two young kids and balancing busy careers as an author, community college dean, and English professor. She particularly loves coaching and training no-gi jiu-jitsu due to her MMA roots, but she also enjoys the slow precision of the gi. Jenny wholeheartedly believes that jiu-jitsu is for everyone and that today is the best day for you to step on the mats for the first time (or the ten thousandth).
Greg Jago
Kids Coach
Purple Belt
Greg Jago is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt and Solid Jiu-Jitsu kids’ coach. He started as a young kid in martial arts with a focus on striking. After being tied into a pretzel one too many times in MMA sparring, he started seriously training in jiu-jitsu. Prior to his current career, he managed and coached at a striking-focused gym in the Seattle area. He is currently a sergeant, SWAT team leader, and defensive tactics instructor for a local police department. When he’s not working or coaching, Greg is often found photographing local combat sports and events in the greater Seattle area or volunteering with the We Defy Foundation.
Baillie Brillante
Assistant Kids Coach
Blue Belt
Baillie Brilliante is a blue belt from Oahu, Hawaii. She is currently a high school student at Graham-Kapowsin High School (Class of 2029) and aspires to pursue a career in law enforcement after graduation.
Chelsi Leonard
Gym Manager
White Belt
Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Chelsi is a homeschooling mom and former pastry chef who loves keeping life creative and active. She still enjoys baking and making goodies for her family and friends, and when she’s not in the kitchen or homeschooling, she loves crocheting, sewing, backpacking, working out, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She enjoys spending time with her family, trying new things, staying active, and making time for the hobbies that bring her joy.

Littles (3-5 years)
This class is 45 minutes – designed for 3–5-year-olds and focuses on social interaction. It is our goal to introduce our youngest practitioners to the gentle art in an engaging and educational way. It is intended to provide social interaction while further developing gross motor skills through coordinated movement and play. Children will be introduced to core Jiu-Jitsu skills and positions. This class DOES require a gi.
Kids (6-9 years)
This class is for children ages 6-9 and lasts 1 hour. Basic fundamental Jiu-Jitsu skills are learned through games and techniques. Children in this class can expect to improve their motor skills, increase their attention to detail, and build positive relationships with their peers and instructors.
Youth (7-13)
This program will provide a more technical approach to learning Jiu-Jitsu. Kids will realize their potential by being presented with and working through challenges while developing their techniques. They will learn self-defense, respect, discipline, and leadership skills while having fun safely expanding their grappling skills.
Adults (14+)
All levels: This class is great for everyone and will focus on the fundamental concepts and movements of Jiu-Jitsu. It will provide the foundation upon which everything else is built. For those looking to compete, we will incorporate a competition class to further develop the athlete; with advanced applications and strategy.
Adult & Kids Comp Class : The Competition Class is a fast-paced, high-tempo training session designed to refine and sharpen your jiu-jitsu for competitions. Generally, no new techniques will be introduced; instead, the focus will be on repetitions, small adjustments, and refining your current skill set. Emphasis will be placed on conditioning, positional drilling, and live training. Anyone interested in competing is welcome to attend.
Women’s Only class
Our women’s only program is led by women instructors and is designed for women of all skill levels that are interested in training only with other women. You can expect to see everyone from moms to teenagers and Jiu-Jitsu hobbyists all the way to active competitors. The goal of the program is to provide women with a welcoming and comfortable environment to train Jiu-Jitsu. With a strong emphasis on community, friendships often grow beyond the mats.
